1935-2023

Passed away at the Civic Hospital on Monday, October 9th, 2023 following a brief illness.

She was the devoted wife of Jean-Louis Simard for 65 years. Their union was blessed with 6 children; France (Shawn), Alain, Louis (Jill), Jasmin (Denis), Rémi, and predeceased by her son Eric (Lee). She was a much-loved grandmother to 10 grandchildren; Lauren, Steffan, Camille, Pascale, Stephanie, Samantha, Selena, Sydney, Gabrielle, and Vincent who added much joy to life throughout the years! As well, was a very proud great-grand-mother to William, Maddie, Zachary and Everly. She was the sister of Liliane (Rhéal) and Marguerite, as well as her brothers-in-law; Lucien (Denise) and Clément (Monique). She was predeceased by her sister Cécile (late Pete) and her brother Gérald (late Maggie).

Madeleine was the youngest daughter of the federal deceased MP Léoda Gauthier (late Rose Anna) from Sudbury, Ontario. She was a strong woman that had survived polio at the age of 15. Following a yearlong battle in hospital, she was determined to not let a disease deter her from her goals. As a speed skater athlete, she persevered and won many titles at the provincial level in Ontario.

She married and lived with her husband Jean-Louis in Sudbury, later moving to Charlesbourg, Quebec, where she was one of the founding members of the Charlesbourg Figure Skating Club. In early 1971s, her husband and family moved to Ottawa. In 1974, she broke many barriers and became an entrepreneurial woman by establishing Figure 8 Boutique Ltd. Her business sense was admired by many of the corporations she dealt with. Madeleine had shortly assessed the need of her customers’ and helped many competitive skaters reach the international level.

She volunteered her time at the Ottawa Minto figure Skating Club. As well, she helped coordinate the Minto Folliettes yearly show, and helped host the 1978/1984 World Figure Skating Championships held in Ottawa.

In her retirement, she enjoyed many summers at the family cottage at lac Clair where many family gathering and celebration were had.

Madeleine will be dearly missed by her husband Jean-Louis and her entire family.

Madeleine Simard (née Gauthier) est décédée à l'Hôpital Civic le 9 octobre 2023 à la suite d'une brève maladie.

Elle laisse dans le deuil son époux de 65 ans, Jean-Louis Simard. De leur union sont nés 6 enfants; France (Shawn), Alain, Louis (Jill), Jasmin (Denis), Rémi, et feu Eric (Lee). Madeleine était la grand-mère très aimée de 10 petits-enfants: Lauren, Steffan, Camille, Pascale, Stephanie, Samantha, Selena, Sydney, Gabrielle, et Vincent qui lui ont donné beaucoup de joie au fil des ans ! Elle était également la très fière arrière-grand-mère de William, Maddie, Zachary et Everly. Elle laisse en deuil ses soeurs Liliane (Rhéal) et Marguerite, ainsi que ses beaux-frères Lucien (Denise) et Clément (Monique). Elle a été prédécédée par sa soeur Cécile (feu Pete) et son frère Gérald (feu Maggie).

Madeleine était la fille cadette du député fédéral défunt Léoda Gauthier (feu Rose Anna) de Sudbury, Ontario. C'était une femme résolue qui avait survécu la polio à l'âge de 15 ans. Après une année de combat à l'hôpital, elle était déterminée à ne pas laisser une maladie la détourner de ses objectifs. En tant qu'athlète de patinage de vitesse, elle a persévéré et a remporté de nombreux titres au niveau provincial en Ontario.

Elle s'est mariée et a vécu avec son mari Jean-Louis à Sudbury, avant de déménager à Charlesbourg au Québec, où elle a été l'un des membres fondateurs du Club de patinage artistique de Charlesbourg.

Au début des années 1971, la famille déménage à Ottawa. En 1974, elle franchit de nombreuses barrières et devient une femme d'affaires en créant Figure 8 Boutique Ltd. Son sens des affaires suscite l'admiration de nombreuses entreprises avec lesquelles elle traite. Madeleine a rapidement évalué les besoins de ses clients et a aidé de nombreux patineurs artistiques compétitifs à atteindre le niveau international.

Elle a offert son temps au Club de patinage artistique Minto d'Ottawa. Elle a également aidé à coordonner le spectacle annuel des Folliettes de Minto ainsi qu'à l'accueil des Championnats du monde de patinage artistique de 1978/1984 qui se sont tenus à Ottawa. À sa retraite, elle a passé de nombreux étés au chalet familial au lac Clair où elle a organisé de nombreuses réunions et célébrations familiales.

Madeleine manquera beaucoup à son mari Jean-Louis et à toute sa famille. M. Simard et la famille aimeraient remercier l'unité NACU de l'Hôpital Civic pour les soins qu' ils ont fournis.
