With great sadness, we announce the death of Malcolm Donaldson, age 86, who passed peacefully on June 24, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his sister, Jean.
Malcolm Campbell Donaldson was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1938. Son of James and Elizabeth Donaldson and brother to James, Frank, Alan, Ellen, Jean, Nanette, and Elizabeth.
After graduating from secondary school, Malcolm began an apprenticeship and joined a boxing club. Malcolm held a Scottish amateur title. Still a teenager, he got to know his future wife, Elizabeth McHardy, and the two of them started a family in 1958.
In 1960 Malcolm and most of the Donaldson family emigrated from Glasgow to Toronto. A new life in Canada opened up fresh opportunities for all, and Malcolm joined the Toronto Metropolitan Police Force, where he served for many years. Later in his career, he was a security officer for the Toronto Star Newspaper, a job he retired from in 2001.
Malcolm and Elizabeth have three children: Elizabeth, Malcolm, and Alan; six grandchildren: Alexandra, Jacob, Taylor, Hugh, Stephanie, and Katie; and three great-grandchildren: Lou, Hazel, and Ava. Malcolm (Jr.)’s wife of 37 years, Deborah, is a much-beloved daughter-in-law.
In their happy retirement, they lived in the house they had built at Bayshore Village, Brechin, Ontario where family and friends enjoyed their company and the beautiful surroundings. Malcolm always enjoyed the golfing opportunities in and around Bayshore. He participated in Fun Runs for the Canadian Heart Fund, and Malcolm and Elizabeth contributed to the Bayshore community as volunteers. Malcolm was always extremely proud of his Scots heritage but equally happy to be a Canadian.
On behalf of the whole family, we acknowledge the profoundly kind and caring efforts of Victoria Village in Barrie, without whom Malcolm would not have experienced a gentle ending to his time on earth.
A memorial service will be held in Barrie, Ontario on June 27, 2024 at 1 p.m. EST, followed by a light luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
