Marie-Louise Milou Kelley

June 6, 1939 — August 16, 2018

Marie-Louise (Milou) Kelley died on August 16 in her 79th year. The cause was heart failure. Milou had a loving heart, but it obviously was not strong enough. She was the beloved wife of Thomas Patrick Kelley, her second husband, for 26 years.

Milou is survived by two sons: Richard, who lives in Kelowna, and Paul Erickson. Paul's wife, Nora Green, was more daughter than daughter-in-law. Milou was the proud grandmother of Hayden and Olivia. She is also survived by her brother, Bob van Riezen. She was predeceased by an older stepbrother, Peter van Riezen, and stepsister, May.

Milou and her family came to Canada from Holland in 1953. During her working career she taught 3 years at Grimsby High School. After completing her MBA she lectured full time at McMaster University for 8 years and then became Director of Education for the Society of Management Accountants of Ontario and, subsequently, of the National Society.

In 1990, Milou started working for the International Federation of Accountants in New York City, where she met her beloved Tom - her New York Miracle as she called him. Milou worked and travelled the globe, often with Tom, while working in New York.

She and Tom retired to Canada in 1999 to be close to her mother, Louise, and to Paul and Nora, and to enjoy being new grandparents, something they both enjoyed for the next 19 years. She also enjoyed travelling, doing volunteer work at the Gardiner Museum, and entertaining. Milou built a network of friends in their new home at Rosedale Glen in Toronto and delighted in entertaining and sharing stories about her life and travels as told through her beautiful collection of art.

Milou was born during an immensely tumultuous time and faced many hardships, difficulties and transitions. A visual person who delighted in needlework and working with miniatures, she suffered for years through many medical procedures to deal with intractable eye problems. During all of these times she showed resiliency and courage. She found the strength to do what had to be done and always tried to find beauty in the people and things around her. Her life is an outstanding example of how one faces adversity and finds beauty and joy in what life has to offer.

Tom and Milou's family invite friends to celebrate her life in the party room of her home at Rosedale Glen from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on August 29, 2018.

In lieu of flowers, if you wish, please donate to the Gardiner Museum.
