Marios Trambakoulos, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2022 in his 87th year surrounded by his wife and two children at the Hellenic Home for the Aged in Scarborough.
Marios emigrated from Lamia, Greece to Toronto in 1967 at the age of 32, where he met his wife Dorothy of 54 years. They were married on April 27, 1968. Marios enrolled at Ryerson Polytech and studied to become a Protection & Control Technologist. Soon after graduation, he began his 25-year career at Ontario Hydro and retired in the summer of 1997. Marios had 2 children, John and Dimitra. Fiercely proud of his heritage and equally proud of being a Canadian Citizen, he often would say “I am a Canadian-Greek!”.
Marios was an autodidact. He taught himself how to cook, golf, how to ski, woodworking and painting. He mastered the art of Bob Ross and painted many beautiful landscapes. He wrote several short stories and finished a novel, The Savage Years. After losing several games of chess to his son, he bought a book on chess and learned several classic strategies - his son never won a game again. He had a life-long love of reading and learning. In his late 50s, he enrolled in a BA degree in Philosophy at York University and at one time was attending university with both his children and his wife.
Marios was always first in line for a new gadget. He bought the first personal computer as soon as it was widely available and taught himself how to use it. He mastered the game King’s Quest before his teenage children. He fostered his children’s love of science fiction by introducing them to Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, and The 6-Million Dollar Man.
Marios embraced Canadian culture in many different ways. He would take his family north for pancakes and maple syrup; he took his family on road trips to Florida and South Carolina, camping and fishing in Northern Ontario. He left a lasting impression on both his children to carry on these traditions with their own families.
Never forgetting his Greek heritage, Easter lambs were a standard tradition at every home Marios lived in. He and Dorothy always welcomed many friends and family to their dinner tables.
He and Dorothy traveled back to Greece every year for almost a decade after his retirement. They traveled throughout the northern country and made a second home for themselves in Korisos.
Marios had a wry sense of humor and loved a good joke.
Marios moved to Revera Leaside retirement home in 2018 and was well cared for there. He then moved to the Hellenic Home in Scarborough in June 2021. The family is deeply grateful to everyone at the Hellenic Home. In his final weeks the staff tended to Marios with kindness, respect and dignity.
Marios is survived by his wife Dorothy, his older sister and older brother in Greece, his sister-in-law Susan (David Smith) his children, John (Sandra Adams) and Dimitra (Andrew Hunter) and his grandchildren, Shaylee (Adams), Nova, John and James (Hunter)
As per his wishes, Marios will be cremated, ashes to be dispersed at several golf courses across Toronto and in his birth country of Greece.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada and to the Hellenic Home for the Aged (Scarborough) are appreciated.
