With fond memories, the family announces the passing of Emily Mary Byck (nee Cole) on May 18, 2016. Emily passed away peacefully in her 98th year, surrounded by family, in Ottawa ON. Mother of Robert (Mary Ellen), Theodore (Madeleine), Ronald (Vivian), Elizabeth (Peter Malen), Peter (Carla), Paul (predeceased) (Mary Ellen), and David (Carolyn). Gigi will also be missed by her 16 grandchildren and 19 great children.
Emily was born on October 8, 1918 in Smith’s Falls ON., the second of four children, and cherished daughter of Helena and Patrick Cole (both predeceased). She is survived by her sister Margaret and predeceased by her sister the Reverend Sister Mary Theresa and her brother Raymond.
After graduation from Nursing in Timmins, ON, Emily married Theodore (Ted) Byck (predeceased) and settled in Timmins. Emily and Ted were very involved in their community and had a wide network of close friends. After being widowed in 1969 Emily returned to full-time nursing and was a Head Nurse at St. Mary's Hospital. Emily spent many happy retirement years living in Niagara Falls while spending winters in Florida, and travelling extensively. Emily was a joiner, enjoying travel, performing arts, poker, bridge, Red Hat events and any gathering with friends or family. More recently Emily moved to Ottawa to be closer to the care and comfort of family. Through hard work and strong faith Emily led by example and was most instrumental in instilling her values and discipline in her family.
The family will be celebrating Emily’s life at a funeral mass at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Stittsville ON on Friday May 20, 2016 at 2 pm. Internment will follow at a later date in Timmins. Many thanks for the compassionate care provided by Hospice Care Ottawa, RiverPark Place Retirement Residence and Queensway-Carleton Hospital.
