Mary Elizabeth (Lewarne) Cole

Mary passed peacefully at 98 years of age, on December 2nd, 2021, in Ottawa, Ontario. Hers was a life well-lived. She was a very positive person and a loving influence on her family’s lives, with a cheerful attitude to the end.

Born on July 6, 1923, in Toronto, Ontario, Mary was the daughter of the late Albert and Ethel May Lewarne, and the sister to Frank (Ruth). She will be missed by her husband Herbert, and children David (Kathee) and Laura (Eileen). Mary was Grandma to Jessica (Derek), Kirsten (Hans) and Derek (Ally), and “GG” to Renna, Lachlan, Leo and Sebastian.

She was a friend to many.

Mary graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Toronto, in 1945. She was an avid outdoors enthusiast, and always encouraged others to enjoy camping, swimming, canoeing, and cottage life. Golf was her sport of choice and much of her time in retirement was spent with female foursome friends. Mary loved to play Bridge, and until very recently, played twice a week. Other hobbies included painting, interior decorating and travelling (China, Portugal, Greece, Scandinavia, Britain, France, Australia, New Zealand, Peru and Mexico). She loved to reminisce about her travels.

As per her wishes, there will not be a service. The family will hold a small private gathering.

The family would like to thank the staff at Amica Westboro for providing a wonderful residence for the last 10 years, and the palliative care team at the Ottawa Civic Hospital.
