October 23, 1928 — January 19, 2025

Ottawa, Ontario

It is with deep sadness that the family of Matthew Surkan announces his passing on January 19, 2025, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, following a brief illness. He was 96 years old.

Matthew was predeceased by his beloved wife, Viola Surkan (Boyko), on July 19, 2023, after 72 years of marriage. He leaves behind his two daughters, Diana (Paul) Pepin and Heather (Simon) Nesrallah, as well as five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Matthew was born on October 23, 1928, in Insinger, Saskatchewan, the youngest of four children, all of whom predeceased him.

In 1948, Matthew joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), beginning his distinguished career in Edmonton. He was later posted to Calgary and Drumheller, Alberta, before moving to Ottawa in 1954, where he continued his service in various capacities. Matthew retired from the RCMP in 1978 with the rank of Staff Sergeant, after a long and dedicated career in public service.

Together with Viola, Matthew shared a deep passion for antiques and collectibles. In retirement, they operated a flea market and auction business in Ottawa. They enjoyed many years of active involvement in the antique business, including owning and managing the Colonnade and Bentley Flea Markets.

Matthew's memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him, and he will be deeply missed.
