Medina Semé Pierre-Louis

July 18, 1937 — November 19, 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Medina Semé Pierre-Louis, known by everyone as Soeur Dina, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, who passed away peacefully in Montreal, Quebec, on November 19, 2024, at the age of 87 years old. Medina was born in Jacmel, Haiti, to the late Délice Pierre-Louis and the late Hermane Plantin. She was the fourth of eleven children, in a home where love, laughter, strong principles and respect were never in short supply.

Médina began her journey in Jacmel before moving to Port-au Prince at the age of 17. She gave birth to four children and lost 2 of them at a very young age. She was married to her long-time partner, the late Jean-Gesner Semé. She helped raise his four children as her own. They stayed on each other’s side until his passing in 2006. After the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010, she moved to Ottawa with her youngest son, Serge, and immediately became part of the community. For the last few months of her life, due to her health, she was cared for by the staff of the Residence les Émeraudes.

As a gifted, passionate and strong woman of God, Médina found joy in the pursuits of a devoted Christian life. She praised God until she could not speak anymore. Médina’s favorite moments were those spent with her family and in the presence of God, praying, singing and meditating. She was a member of l’Église évangélique d’Ottawa.

Médina raised and helped raise close to 100 children who are today valuable members of their communities. She left behind her sons, Ernst and Serge; her daugther, Suze, her stepchildren, Wilner, Nadège, Arthur and André-Lourde; the spouses of her children and stepchildren, Marie-Lise, Rolande, Varta and Roberto. She also left behind 22 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, and her legacy of love, warmth, strength, sense of respect, honor and her passion for God, will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

You may rest in peace, dear Sr Dina, knowing you will never be forgotten.
