Peacefully, in his 100th year, Michael Dobrinoff passed away on May 2nd, 2022, succumbing to his lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Michael was the beloved husband of Doreen, marrying in July 1962, they were together for more than 60 years. Michael was also a devoted father to Thea (and Tom) and Andre, and the overjoyed “Papa” (grandfather) to Luke, Nicole and Michael. Michael’s final weeks were spent in the tranquility of a caring Hospice, with family by his side every day and in his final moments.
Born September 23rd, 1922 in Sofia, Bulgaria, Michael was raised with his 2 brothers, Andre (late) the oldest and Stefan (late) the youngest. All three boys remained close throughout their lives and all three would follow in their father’s footsteps to become medical doctors. So, at the age of 19, Michael went to Germany to study medicine at the University of Gottingen. After graduating, Michael, as with other childhood friends, decided to come to Canada, arriving in Halifax in December 1950. After securing his Canadian licence as a medical doctor, Michael would spend 21 years as a General Practitioner on the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nations Reserve. Then in 1976, he and his family moved to Thornhill, where he began working for Health Canada as the Medical Officer in Charge for the Quarantine and Immigration division. Finally, in 1991 he hung up his stethoscope and enjoyed (a lengthy) retirement.
Without a doubt, Michael’s ultimate love was his family and it was unquestionably evident every single day. His other passion was, of course, tennis. Not only could he watch for hours, but he would go on to play for decades, stopping at the age of 85. As a senior (55+), Michael won a number of provincial titles, was Canadian doubles champion in 1988, 1992 and 1994, and had the honour of representing Canada on an international stage. Michael also enjoyed travelling and spending as much time as he could with friends, where his quick wit was often on display. Through the years, Michael’s bond with his brothers and his fondness of Bulgaria would result in many family vacations to Bulgaria and other European countries. Early in retirement, Michael and Doreen would continue their travels, where he vowed to eat, drink and have fun. Many winters were spent relishing in Florida’s warmth or picking a global destination to visit. Later in retirement it was simple, sit back and enjoy family (and watch tennis).
Michael was truly blessed and evidence showed he had a good and healthy life. He will be missed!
A private service is planned for immediate family, however a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
The entire Dobrinoff family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Ian Anderson House for their compassionate care of our friend, colleague, uncle, grandfather, father and husband.
Whether in goodwill or in lieu of flowers, donations to I.A.H. would greatly be appreciated.
