Michael MacKinnon
August 26, 1939 - November 29, 2021
Predeceased by his brother Dan (Michele Bisson). Best friend and husband to Shelley McDonald. Wonderful Dad to Lisa (Mike Reddy) and Ted (Claudia Moore), favourite uncle of Daniele and Catou. Mike was a teacher (OBE), he taught intermediate science for many years and then completed his career as the old fashioned “shop teacher”. He loved the fact that they paid him to work with all these great machines.
Mike was very proud of his children and loved his family. He enjoyed having the MacKinnons here for Christmas and Thanksgiving, although he complained loud and long about them coming!
Mike loved just about every vehicle there was - an amazing interest and knowledge of cars but his favourites were the two wheeled types of transportation - motor cycles, Vespa Scooter and the very best - his bicycle. He and Bert bicycled to Cape Breton one summer and this was the start of many trips with Bert and Millie. He also did bicycling trips in Vermont with Jim (Julie) and Al.
Mike loved nature, had great concerns for the environment and a great love of animals, always having one or two dogs. He enjoyed helping Renee with Kootenay which led to her becoming part of our extended family.
Mike loved his neighbourhood and the wonderful friends in Crystal Beach. He would often stop for coffee at Ralph’s and have a great chat with some of the regulars. Mike had fun hosting the Canada Day party and the number of attendees grew every year. He was always one to help others but rarely asked for any in return. Help you take down a tree, would take the snowblower to a neighbour’s driveway - whatever needed to be done.
Mike’s last year was rough and he had many visits to the Queensway Carleton Hospital. He said that everyone who worked there was so kind and caring. He commented that it was a great place to visit, except for the reason that you were actually going. Special thanks to Dr. R. MacRae, Dr. Rajani, Dr. Battens and the Bayshore Home Support nurses, who took such wonderful care of him - the amazing Jesse, you made a world of difference. Thanks to the Ottawa Hospital Palliative Care team.
As per his wishes, there will be no service. Next summer we will have a party in the back yard, raise a glass and say, we loved you Mike and we are so glad that we had you in our life!
