Milan Horava, 92, died October 30, 2017 at the Carlingview Manor nursing home in Ottawa, following a significant period of illness due to congestive heart failure.
He was born in Brno, Czechoslovakia on February 23, 1925, and spent his childhood in Prague. He lived in a working class neighbourhood and enjoyed the outdoors and playing with his brothers and friends. He loved fishing, camping, track and field, and music. Following the war, he left for England where he worked in various jobs, before emigrating to Canada in 1949 to be with his brother and sister in Montreal. In 1952 he met Adrienne Novak, and they were married the following year. They had one son (Tony) in 1961.
He quickly found employment as a chemist in various Montreal companies, including Canadair, Sherwin Williams, and Spar Aerospace. After separating in 1977, he met Florence Rafalksi, with whom he lived until her death in 1996. They lived in a rustic cottage near Rawdon, Quebec, and very much enjoyed the tranquility of country life, including gardening, painting, wood carving, and playing classical guitar.
In 2001, he suffered a stroke and moved to Ottawa to be closer to his son Tony and family, where he enjoyed many weekend dinners that were usually accompanied by various musical performances. He will be missed for many things - his sense of humour; his kindness and generosity; his joy in music; his love of nature and art; his passion for life and ideas; and his love of family. He is survived by his son Tony (married to Susan Palmer); grandson Malcolm Horava, step-grandson Adam Palmer; and nieces Susan Horava Christensen and Kaci Horava. May he rest in peace. We will always remember him.
