Miranda Oliver

January 29, 1958 — January 17, 2013

Miranda Margaret Hoblyn Oliver 1958-2013
After a painful battle with ovarian cancer, Miranda died on Thursday, January 17. Devoted mother of Kira, common-law partner of George Metaxakis, only daughter of Hugh and Heather Oliver, sister of David, Angus and Charles, aunt of numerous nephews and nieces, and with many close friends (human and canine), Miranda was born at Madeley in Staffordshire, England, lived her early years in Epsom, and emigrated with her family to Canada in 1966. She eventually graduated with a B.A. and an M.Ed from the University of Toronto and taught at several community colleges. She was both an accomplished artist and musician, with a singularly independent and principled cast of mind. In short, she did it her way. She was always attracted to Africa, in her twenties cycling on her own from one side of Africa to the other and climbing most of Kilmanjaro. She later taught at a water-technology institute in Ethiopia.
But ultimately, her greatest happiness and sense of achievement lay in her relationship with her daughter.
In accord with her wishes, she will be cremated in the presence of her family, and later (at a locale and on a date still to be arranged) there will be "a joyful party" to celebrate her life.
