It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the loss of our beloved Narendra “Naren” Kumar Srivastava who passed away on April 21st, 2023 at the age of 86 surrounded by his family. His beautiful life will be forever cherished in the lives of his wife of 57 years, Susan; his son Arvind and daughter-in-law Mudita; his grandchildren Avika and Nitika; his other beloved children Ravi, Alok, Rashmi, Binita Sunita and Sanjay as well as countless relatives and loved ones.
Narendra came to Canada in 1961 on a Commonwealth Scholarship to complete his Masters in structural engineering at the University of Toronto, followed by a PhD in civil engineering from the University of Waterloo. He chose to settle in Moncton, New Brunswick and was Dean of Civil Engineering at L’Université de Moncton for 31 years, retiring in 2002, but not before receiving the lifelong honour of Professor Emeritus, a status that he was very proud of. His family loved to tease him that for all his engineering accolades and awards, hundreds of publications, involvements in affluent communities such as the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS) and Structural Engineer World Congress (SEWC), he still could not figure out how to swim, despite all their attempts to teach him. He was a rare beautiful soul that cared deeply for everyone around him, and because of this he made an impact everywhere he went and words cannot express how greatly he will be missed.
Besides accomplishing great academic achievements, Narendra was a family man and cherished nothing above spending time with his loved ones. He brought people together and cultivated a sense of family and community everywhere he went. He used his experience in life to guide those around him and was always quick to offer a helping hand. There was no greater love in his life than his wife, as they travelled the world together and started a family that he imbued with so much love and laughter. The world lost an incredible light, but his memory will live on in the lives of everyone who he met in the stories that we will continue to cherish and hold dear.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday April 25th at 11:00 am at Pinecrest Funeral Homes, 2500 Baseline Road in Ottawa, Canada to celebrate his beautiful life. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be sent to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Ottawa Humane Society in honour and memory of Narendra, who was an avid supporter of their organizations.
