HANEY, NORMA JEAN (nee Matthew)
May 26, 1925 - Toronto, ON – October 14, 2016 – Etobicoke, ON
Norma Jean Haney passed away peacefully at the Dorothy Ley Hospice on October 14, 2016 after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Norma was a real scrapper having fought cancer on six different occasions - a 5 and 1 record is pretty good.
She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her three children Matt (Anita) and Mark Haney and Michelle (Dave)Haney- Kileeg and 4 beloved grandchildren Megan and Brett Haney and Lisa and Neil Kileeg. Norma was predeceased by her parents Margaret and Norman Matthew and her brother Donald Matthew and sister Kay Cowan (Matthew). Norma was born in Toronto but spent most of her formative years in Aurora where she graduated from high school. Her family spent many summers at Balsam Lake. Norma's happy place was at the cottage and she shared this passion with her extended family and many friends. She worked most of her career in public school administration primarily at Scarlett Heights Collegiate and ultimately the Etobicoke Board office.
She was an exceptional mother and friend and will be sorely missed by all who knew her well. She was a wonderful hostess - it played to her love for planning, cooking/ baking and just having fun. Whether it was a "Merrygale Gang" dinner party, the ladies from Bridge Club or some hordes of teenagers partying down in the basement – everyone was welcome and treated well. Thank You Super Mom - "outstanding job" – hardly gives due credit.
Norma needed to be busy and active - she loved participating in aqua fit classes at the Etobicoke Olympian and enjoying social time afterwards. Lecture series with friend Astrid Clarke, vacations with the Sargents and going downtown for the theatre with Cousin Doris were favourite activities.
Nobody in the world loved Christmas more than this woman - three separate celebrations each year - "early Xmas" in Calgary followed by Mark's birthday/more Xmas preps in Ottawa and finally the real big day celebrations in Aurora. Boxing Day usually involved some early planning for next year's Christmas - "can you give me some ideas for presents?". There was always some little girl in the ole girl!
A special word of thanks goes out to the Cowan/Parsons/Matthew families for their support over all the years. You all made the tough times easier and the good times more available. A heartfelt thank you from the Haney's and Kileeg's.
At Norma's request there will be no public funeral service. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the nursing and medical staff (especially Dr. Cindy Quinton) at Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga General Hospital and the Dorothy Ley Hospice (especially Dr. Hemrahi, Debbie Fitzsimmons and Nurse Linda). If desired, donations may be made to the Dorothy Ley Hospice http://dlhospice.org/# or the Canadian Cancer Society www.cancer.ca.
