It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dad, Olaf Rudolph on February 09, 2025 at his home in Whitby, Ontario at the age of 85.
Deepest sympathies are extended to his wife Helga Rudolph, who was at his side. Survived by his children, Brigitte Rudolph (Ron), Brian Rudolph (Jennifer) and step-daughter Trish Horner (Carl). Proud grandfather of Justin Moase and Bailey Rudolph. Eldest of four siblings, Olaf is survived by brother, Bernd Rudolph (Andrea). He is pre-deceased by twin brothers Gert and Jorn. He will be fondly remembered by many friends and neighbours.
Olaf was born in Hamburg, Germany to Gerhard and Irmgard Rudolph. He was very athletic, the recipient of numerous awards. Olaf canoed competitively as the bow paddler for a club in Hamburg while earning his master millwright designation working on the ships in the Hamburg harbour. With only fifty dollars in his pocket, Olaf took a freighter to Canada in 1960. He resided in Toronto for a couple years with friends from Germany where they were proud members of the Canadian Beer Drinking Team. They actually had jackets made up. He represented Canada canoeing in Lake Placid against American teams.
After walking in the door at General Motors and being hired on the spot, Olaf settled in Oshawa. He retired from GM after thirty five years of service. In 1972, he purchased a cottage on Varty Lake, followed shortly after with a canoe and catamaran. Throughout his life he had a deep appreciation and love of nature. He enjoyed many days canoeing, sailing, going for walks and watching the loons and ospreys at the cottage.
Olaf was an active member of his community. He belonged to the Oshawa Chorale Society appearing in numerous plays. He joined the choir at Club Loreley in Oshawa where he and Helga made many lifelong friends. Olaf served two terms as president and took on varied roles throughout his almost 50 years at the club. He donated blood to the Canadian Red Cross every three months. At 85 years of age, he continued to swim and go for walks daily.
Affectionately known as “The Grizz”, Olaf will be remembered for his kindness, willingness to help others and as a loving husband and father. According to his wishes, funeral services will not be held. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to The Canadian Red Cross or, The Salvation Army two charities he regularly contributed to.
Prost to a life well-lived. Dad will be greatly missed and forever loved.
