Patricia Doig

August 11, 1938 — December 23, 2016

Pat was magic. Through her capability, energy, humour and courage, she transformed things and brought freshness and fun. Her hallmark was her faith in the power of community. She often spoke to groups about inclusion and she lived what she taught. Pat kept current, trusted to common sense and always returned to values.
Pat's belief in community was a blessing to those fortunate to attend her schools: Holy Rosary, St. Patrick, and St Paul Elementary Schools, The Centre for Lifelong Learning, the OISE/Western Leadership Training Program, the Robarts Demonstration School and Matthews Hall all flourished in the warmth of her inspiring leadership.
In physical education, Pat promoted natural movement, guided discovery and one hundred percent participation, commitments which earned her OPHEA's notable Bing Caswell Award. As founding director of the provincial Amethyst School, she worked to build resilience and life fulfillment for learning disabled adolescents. She expanded Adult and Continuing Education for the LDCSB to over 10,000 participants. After retirement, she became Head of Matthews Hall for 18 years, and had it bubbling with talent and joy, so welcoming that the hallways embraced you as you entered. She was very happy to chair the Board of Trustees of Brescia University College during its transition to secular management.
Pat was adventurous. She canoed in Muskoka, cycled through France, travelled by balloon over Florida and paraglided off steep cliffs in California. She explored her family's roots in Ireland. Wherever she went, she found a great beach to walk on. Music and movement were vital to her. She loved a good story and a cuddly dog, laughed often and threw excellent parties.
Pat often used the symbol of light to urge others to share their personal talents and, being with her, they became smarter, swifter, better than they ever dreamed. She appreciated greatly the people who touched her life and always said thank you. Above all, she was caring to her large circle of family and friends.
Pat was generous in her philanthropy: those wishing to remember her are invited to send a donation to Brescia University College or St. Joseph's Hospitality Center. A celebration of her life and legacy will take place at the Mercato, Brescia University College, Western University beginning at 4:00 pm, Wednesday, January 4, 2017.
