PETER FREDERICK DAVISON, October 1, 1939 - February 18, 2016 - The fire truck has been put in the hall for the last time. The final mystery has been solved. The cryptic crosswords will miss their master. The knives will miss the warm hand of their chef. The bottles of peaty scotch and sake will miss their curious gaijin. And we will miss an inspiring father, a devoted friend, a generous grandfather and a loyal partner - Peter F. Davison.
He wrote his last chapter like he led his life and his 30-year career with the Toronto Fire Services: with pride and craftsmanship. Peter was never afraid to try something new, and his interests ranged from creative woodworking to fly fishing, from cooking to cryptic crosswords and Sudoku. He loved jazz music, Japanese culture, and a really good mystery novel. He was a dedicated father to Sean and Vanessa, instilling in his children from their earliest years a passion for art, literature, and culture that continues to guide and influence their lives. He was deeply involved in the lives of his grandchildren, Tess and Wyatt, and was fascinated with watching them explore the world. He was strengthened by a true love that overcame his stubbornness in his relationship with his wife, partner and friend, Dianne. His life-long bond with his twin sister, Judy, brought him much comfort. His one regret at his death was that he would not see his grandkids continue to explore and grow in this wonderful world.
He was ready to leave; his illness had stolen his joy in reading, in cooking and dining, in the puzzles that fed his insatiable brain. The maddening duality of this situation is that we will miss him so deeply because he was a wonderful father, husband and grandfather... but we're happy, too, because he was so tired of existing and not living.
The family wishes to thank all of Peter's medical team at Toronto General Hospital (Dr. G. Darling, Dr. R. Gilbert, and Dr. S. Cardew) and Princess Margaret Hospital (Dr. R. Jang, and Dr. J. Bryson). Without the skill and compassion of his incredible palliative care team, we wouldn't have had as much time with him as we did.
A Celebration of Peter's life will be announced at a later time. He never rushed anything so we won’t either.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and Jazz FM.
