Phyllis Gertrude Young

August 10, 1918 — August 10, 2022

YOUNG, Phyllis Gertrude - Passed away on August 10, 2022, at the age of 104.  Loving wife of Cecil Leslie Young (died June 5, 2001), mother of David and Randy; grandmother of Paul, Nadine, Andrew and Elspeth; great grandmother of Kaylie, Emma, Noah, Adelynn, and Archer. Phyllis was born in eastern Ontario and grew up in Toronto and London, often spending her childhood summers at her grandparent’s farm near Morewood.  In those days, a child alone could take the train from Toronto and get picked up by grandpa in the horse and buggy after arriving at the Winchester station. Phyllis married Cecil during World War II, giving up her bank secretary job to follow Cec through his progress and graduation from the Commonwealth Air Training Plan run here by the RCAF.  Moving to bases as far away as Thunder Bay (at that time, Fort William) was part of her wartime experience.  After the war, and Cec’s Queen’s University degree, they moved to Barrie to start a family on Letitia Street.  First at the “little house”, then after building the “big house”, and finally at the Chartwell retirement residence, Phyllis has lived on Letitia Street for over 72 years!  Over the years, Phyllis and Cec enjoyed family driving vacations across North America, square dancing clubs at home, and in retirement, motor-home travel to as far away as Alaska.  After a nasty fall and an expertly repaired hip thanks to RVH, Phyllis took to driving a walker and moved to Chartwell at 140 Letitia.  She loved the friendly atmosphere and a chance to retell and even demonstrate the occasional story from the past.  Many thanks to the expert and caring Chartwell family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Phyllis’s memory to the RVH Foundation.
