Rene Arthur Eduard Mathis, 67 of Mississauga, Ontario passed away on Thursday April 14, 2022 surrounded by family. He was born on October 18, 1954 in Marl, Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1959. He is survived by his parents Karl and Ruth Mathis. He is survived by his sister Donna Wiser (husband Daniel Wiser) and several nieces and nephews.
He married Colette (Flynn), the love of his life in 1983, who survives him. Rene is survived by his daughter Rachel Tollstam and husband Adrian, his son Sean Mathis, three grandchildren (Charlie, Sophia and Aidan) and his dog, Kaiser.
Rene was diagnosed with Juvenile arthritis at age 19 and struggled with chronic pain throughout his life as a result. Rene spent many years working in property management. He had a great appreciation for classic cars, music and found playing his base guitar to be therapeutic particularly for his arthritis. He was an avid storyteller and enjoyed writing mostly poetry, short stories, song lyrics, even winning awards for his poetry. Rene enjoyed cooking, trying new cuisines, the outdoors and was a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He will be greatly missed by friends, family and those who knew and loved him. It gives us great comfort to know that he is at peace and pain free.
The memorial service will be held on Saturday April 30th, 2022 at St. John’s Dixie Cemetery and Crematorium, 737 Dundas Street East, Mississauga, ON L4Y 2B5 from 1:00-3:00 PM. The family insists that people make donations in support of mental health or arthritis in lieu of flowers.
