Richard (Rick) Owen

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Rick Owen, on June 7, 2020, at the age of 64, from small cell lung cancer. He was at home surrounded by his family at the time of his death.

Rick was the loving husband of Patricia (Tricia) Spice for 31 years and proud father of daughters Laura and Amanda. Son of Robert Owen (deceased 2003) and Elizabeth Sim Owen. Younger brother to Natalie Owen (deceased 2010), big brother to Tracy (Fred Cooke), Morgan (Carla Forgeron) and Jeff (deceased 2017/ Bridie Finnerty) and brother-in-law to Joan Spice (Michael Joyce). Uncle to Allison, Melanie, Mike, Kai and Erin.

In recent years Rick enjoyed his retirement by working as a part-time driver for Enterprise, playing tennis and (sometimes!) raking in big pots at the occasional poker nights with his buddies. Rick and Tricia journeyed to Florida, North and South Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana to celebrate Rick’s birthday in warmer climes, and Rick made several solo trips to California, Florida and British Columbia to visit friends. He resurrected his old passion for fishing visiting his brother’s family in Saskatchewan.

Before his retirement, Rick worked for the Canada Revenue Agency for 34 years and became the go-to guy for anything to do with registered retirement plans. In recognition of his excellent service to Canada, he was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal in 2002.

We want to thank all of Rick’s and Tricia’s friends for their support over the past months, made more important although challenging in this time of isolation and physical distancing.

Our thanks to the doctors, nurses and aides at The Ottawa Hospital and to the Champlain LHIN, Carefor staff and Orleans Palliative Care Team who helped us so much in Rick’s final days. In particular, thank you Lynn (Menard) for your compassionate care as Rick’s primary nurse.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life to remember Rick will take place at a future date
