Roland Ortiz-Luis Gueco

November 28, 1947 — July 24, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce Roland Ortiz-Luis Gueco, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2024 at Juravinski Hospital with the love of his life, Sylvia by his side.

Roland was a family man. He was a kind and loving husband to his soulmate, Sylvia. In December 2023, they celebrated their golden 50th wedding anniversary. Roland was a beloved father to his son Bryan and daughter-in-law Olivia and daughter Guia and son-in-law Joe. Roland was a proud lolo (grandfather) to his only grandson Noah, and three beautiful granddaughters Scarlet, Salina and Abby. Roland was the third eldest of the late Jesus Sr and Angela Gueco. Known as Dikong, he was survived by his siblings Cristeta Jurado (late Reynaldo Jurado), Manuel Gueco, Melissa Gueco Ritter, Jesus Gueco Jr. (Cecilia Gueco), and Celeste Gueco-Jeethan (Paul Jeethan).

In his younger years, Roland was a social bee. He was one of the organizers of the Carinosa Club. Roland took ballroom dancing lessons following the footsteps of his parents. Roland and Sylvia would attend many dance functions for many years. He was a hard worker bee working as a machinist for a paper company, Hilroy for over 30 years where he retired early at the age of 59.

Roland was known for his sense of humour, and infectious deep belly laughter, which would carry across the room. He loved life and travelled the world with his wife and often friends, throughout Europe, and the Baltics. They’ve been to Portugal, Spain, France, Rome, Egypt, India, Dubai, Switzerland, Germany, Holy Land in Jordan, Mexico, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Medjugorje, Austria, Czech Republic to name a few! In 2013, Roland and Sylvia renewed their wedding vows in Cana, the Holy Land.

Roland lived a great life, but after 3 years of an uphill battle he succumbed to the rare neurological condition, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Roland will be remembered for his strength, wisdom and always putting his family first. Always in our memories, and forever in our hearts.
