With love, sadness, and gratitude for the beautiful place he held in our lives, we announce the peaceful departing of Chief Petty Officer Russell Lavers on July 20th, 2022. Russell passed just two days before his 99th birthday, at Sunnybrook Veteran’s Centre in Toronto. He was surrounded by family throughout the day and passed quietly with his daughters by his side.
Russell is remembered by his wife of 75 years, Mabel, as well as their three daughters (Debbie, Sandra, and Denise), 6 grandchildren (Chelsea, Brittany, Daniel, Stacey, Angie, and Tammy), and 7 great-grandchildren (Maya, Mekkah, Charlie, Ellie, Keegan, Paige, and Devon). He joins his father Russell, his mother Ida, his brother Caryl, and his best friend, George “Georgie” Bigmore.
A private celebration of life is being held for family and close friends this Saturday, July 23rd, 2022.
Russell was born in Plymouth, England in 1923. He travelled the world serving with the Royal British Navy for 33 years (1943-1976) and moved to Canada in 1978. Of all his accomplishments, none compare to Russell’s dedication to his role as loving husband, Dad, Grandad, and Great-Grandad. He leaves a legacy of love, kindness, and an incredible sense of humour. We take comfort in picturing him young and strong again, singing and dancing with a rye and ginger in hand.
Our sincerest thanks to the kind and caring staff of the Sunnybrook Veteran’s Centre’s LSSE Wing, who provided loving care for Russell for the past 3 years. Special thanks especially to his nurses Mina, Olga, and Tessa, as well as Dr. Robyn Moxley, who treated and adored him like family.
Donations are gratefully accepted in Russell’s name to Sunnybrook Veteran’s Centre.
Rest easy, our sweet Sailor.
