Catherine Ng Shu Fong passed away on Wednesday 13th November in Ottawa, Canada, aged 88. She passed away peacefully in her sleep overnight and is survived by three children and grandchildren.
Catherine was born in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia, the eldest daughter of eight children of Shea Wah Ng and Soo Ching Chan.
Catherine met her future husband, John Wong Man Ban, whilst studying dressmaking in Hong Kong. John was working as an optician in there and, instead of charging her for a pair of spectacles, he asked her for a date. After getting married, they returned to Shu Fong's family home in Sandakan, Malaysia. John set up an optician's business, whilst Shu Fong was the homemaker. Together they raised three children. As well as managing the home and children, Shu Fong was also a regular at John's optician premises, socializing and helping with customers.
John and Shu Fong emigrated to Canada in 1994 after John was forced to retire following a stroke. They lived with their eldest son Paul for several happy years until eventually John moved to a care home. Catherine visited John regularly in his care home and they would also talk on the phone every day until John's passing in 2017.
There will be a liturgy service, followed by the internment of the ashes, at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa at 11am on Saturday, 23rd Nov 2019.
