It is with great sadness that the family of Sonja Jurgen (nee Krusic) announces her passing on September 15, 2016 after complications set in as a result of kidney failure.
Sonja was born July 16, 1930 and died at 86 years old.
Sonja was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the Wife of Hans Jurgen, Mother of 2 children – Walter and Norman Jurgen, Mother-in-law to Stella Jurgen, Grandmother to Nicole, Ryan and Kurt Jurgen, the Daughter of Rafael Krusic (dec.) and Julijana Krusic (Nee Simcic – dec.), Sister to Milena Batic (Nee Krusic – dec.), Step-Sister to Nensi Hart (nee Krusic) and Tilka Marzolf (nee Krusic – dec.). Aunt to Mirijam Kosec (nee Batic) and Nives Batic.
Sonja immigrated to Canada in June, 1953.
She meet Hans in Toronto, both new immigrants to Canada. They dated for 3 weeks, got married at the Toronto City Hall on March 8, 1954, during the Noon hour, and then went back to work.
Sixty two years later, until Sonja’s passing, Hans, a true caregiver, was by her side in hospital, making sure she was nourished and comfortable while continuing to manage the household affairs.
Sonja had good work and financial ethics.
In Slovenia, Sonja worked in banking and a family clothing business.
In Canada, she quickly learned the English language, and worked a life-long career in banking, health care, retail sales and government services.
Sonja was a long time resident of Mississauga where she enjoyed her home and her garden.
She enjoyed traveling and shopping. She was known to be extremely generous with gifts for her family.
Sonja was not a fan of eating at restaurants, but preferred to cook a home-made meal or bake a dessert. Her cooking never really turned out the best – she was not one for presentation – but it always tasted pretty good!
Sonja will be remembered for her boldness, strength, intelligence, strong will, determination, kind heart, generosity and blunt opinions – whether you wanted to hear them or not.
She was elegant and gracious, and when you received her gratitude, affection or acknowledgement you knew she meant it and that you really earned it. It meant something to receive her praise. She was genuine and honest, hardworking and sincere. An inspiration to others for her tenacity and beautiful spirit.
It’s a blessing that her struggle with illnesses has come to an end, now Sonja can rest in peace.
Sonja, your family will miss you, but you can rest assured that your special personality and personal traditions will live on through us.
