Surinder Kaur Khera

October 3, 1944 — January 22, 2021

Fondly and lovingly remembered always, it is with great sorrow that the family of Surinder Kaur Dhillon mourns her passing. Surinder, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on January 22, 2021, in Hamilton, Ontario at the age of 76.

Surinder was born in Punjab, India on October 3, 1944. In India, she married Kuldip Singh Khabra and, together with their children, they moved to Canada in 1974 to provide greater opportunities for their children and the generations to follow. Their courageous act to move to a new country with so much uncertainty exemplifies the kind of woman she was. Because of her actions, the fruits of her labor are enjoyed by generations still being born that can enjoy the safety, choices, and freedom that came with living in Canada. When she became a wife and a mother, she lovingly spent her days caring for her family. Her core value of ‘family first’ was what she cherished the most. She always wanted her family together. She believed in good, honest, hard work ethics, and every day she demonstrated her ability to provide and sacrifice for her children. One of her best traits was her ability to believe that there was inherent good in all people and believed that everyone had great potential. These values now guide her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and will continue to the future generations. Surinder loved spending time walking, cooking, and most of all, knitting. She would never take the bus but enjoyed her surroundings walking everywhere she went. She loved spending time in the kitchen creating delicious home-style meals for her family. She also used cooking to welcome anyone who would grace her home with their presence, and many memories were made around her table enjoying her delicious meals. Her knitting was another way she shared her love. She enjoyed providing warmth with her knitted sweaters for her loved ones for special occasions. Surinder’s warm and caring spirit will always be in the hearts of everyone that had the privilege of having her in their lives. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Surinder is survived by many loving family members: her children, Daljit Khabra (Gurdev), Narinder Daniel (David), Rajinder Wendland (Christian), Bal Khabra, Navneet Khera; 7 grandchildren, Manpreet, Manveer, and Simran Khabra, Tim Khabra (Cristina), and Steven Daniel (Kayla), Courtney, and Kayla Wendland; 4 great-grandchildren, Jaidyn, Julius, Jude, and Olivia Khabra; as well as numerous relatives and friends.

Surrinder is predeceased by her parents, Mehar Singh, and Pritam Kaur Dhillon; her husband, Kuldip Singh Khabra; her loving sister, Mohni Kaur Dhadwal; and her grandson, Justin Wendland

Due to current restrictions in place for funerals, a small private memorial service will be held. The service will be live-streamed for those wanting to share these moments with her family. The celebration of life will be held at a later date.
