Died peacefully in Mississauga at The Village of Erin Meadows on Saturday July 25, 2015 at the age of 80. A devoted friend to all who knew her and a very caring mother, Sylvia, aka "Muzzy", leaves behind daughters Jennifer Carlucci (Joe), Cathryn Hoffman (Glenn) and Laura Barrett (Richard), survived by her brother Michael Cranston(Linda) of Halifax. She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews as well as all the others who made up her somewhat complicated but inclusive extended family.
Born in Edmonton on June 16, 1935 to William and Frances Cranston (nee Gregory), the family moved to Hamilton, Ontario where her father pursued a career in radio, becoming the general manager of CKOC radio station. Sylvia attended Delta High School where she met and eventually married fellow Delta alumnus David Hoffman (Katie).Dynamic, loving and lovely, known to dance a jig for no apparent reason, Sylvia just loved to dance. She had a broad infectious smile that charmed everyone who met her. She was a brave and fashionable hostess who loved to entertain. She was a passionate cook, and an adept gardener raising orchids and creating her beloved Old English gardens. Sylvia was, a caring social worker (Toronto) and was later successful in real estate (Ottawa). An avid traveller, Sylvia's love of food led her to fearlessly eat her way through adventures in places such as Europe, China and the Caribbean. Her fondest memories were of the years spent living in London and Glasgow, where she learned to cook a mean curry.
The family wish to thank the incredible staff and management on the Sheridan floor of The Village of Erin Meadows. Their loving care of Sylvia over the past year is profoundly appreciated. Her palliative care there in the last days of her life provided her with the peace and dignity she deserved and provided our family with kindness and support throughout. The family also wish to thank the supportive staff at King Gardens Residence for her earlier dementia care, the helpful staff of the various dementia care day programs she attended, and the caring companions who assisted her when she was still living in Kemptville.
If desired in lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada would be greatly appreciated.
