After a long life of service to God and Country, John has gone to be with his Creator. John passed away peacefully in his 80th year on Thursday February 4th, 2021 at Sarsfield Colonial Nursing Home.
Beloved husband and best friend of Barbara McKenzie. Much loved father of Ian (Mandy) Tyrrell, Janice (Terry) McKenzie and step-daughter Robin (David) Brushey. He will be forever missed by his grandchildren: Jonathan, Kaitlyn, Ethan, Conner, Gage and Grace who were the love of his life. Predeceased by his father Rev. Canon James S. K. Tyrrell, mother Ada Dorcas Armstrong and brother William R.M. Tyrrell; survived by sister-in-law Lorraine and Margaret (Tim) Webster. Lovingly remembered by many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.
He always considered himself “A Valley Boy” – growing up in Balderson and Carp. He was active in sports both in high school and university. Music was an important part of his life as well, both organ and voice. After ordination he served in Newfoundland where he met and married Marilyn Tyrrell (Tipple). A return to the diocese of Ottawa soon followed where he served in Pembroke and Winchester, Chesterville and South Mountain. It was there his ministry took a turn – joining the air force, he served as a chaplain for many years. After retiring from the military in 1996, he returned to ministry in the Diocese of Ottawa and married his loving wife, Barbara. They enjoyed 23 years of marriage sharing ministry and passions for gardening, camping and golfing.
John warmed countless lives throughout his lifetime. Following John’s wishes he has been cremated, but we will gather to celebrate his life, love and kind-heartedness when we are able to gather together again. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St Mary’s Church, Navan or the Parkinson’s Society.
