Thomas Patrick Kelley passed away peacefully at home on November 26. He spent his last weekend surrounded by his loved ones enjoying great memories and times of laughter.
Tom was born on August 29, 1937 in a tenement in Lawrence, Massachusetts. It was the depression and Tom’s parents didn’t have much money at the time, but this upbringing helped to shape him into the man, father and grandfather he would become.
Tom focused on hard work and service from an early age. He helped to support his family from a young age, including joining the US Army at 17 where after extensive training he served as a radar repairman in Alabama and Alaska.
After leaving the Army, he obtained a Business Administration degree with an accounting major in 1961 and joined the CPA firm of Arthur Andersen & Co. Tom left that firm in 1973 as a senior audit manager and joined the American Institute of CPAs in New York City. He ultimately left that organization in 1995 having risen to the position of senior vice president. For the next nine years Tom was a consultant and expert witness on professional standards and practices.
In 1991, he met his beloved Milou and they were married in 1992. They then spent 7 years enjoying NYC before retiring to Canada in 1999 to be close to her mother, Louise, and to her son Paul and wife Nora, as well as to enjoy being new grandparents. Tom and Milou cherished their years together in Toronto with family, friends and volunteer work until Milou’s death in 2018.
Tom served 9 years on the board of his condo, first as treasurer and then as president. He also did extensive volunteer work for a number of years, including acting as a volunteer literacy tutor for children and adults and participating in a restorative justice program for youth offenders. Milou and Tom built a network of friends in their new home and delighted in entertaining.
Tom is survived by his stepson Paul, his daughter-in-law Nora and his beloved grandchildren Hayden and Olivia.
Friends and family will be invited to a celebration of life ceremony to be held in January. Donations in lieu of flowers can be provided to the St Michael’s Hospital Foundation.
