On Wednesday, May 10, 2023 following a short stay in Palliative Care, Valerie died peacefully. Many thanks to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at Joseph Brant Hospital for their compassionate end of life care
Predeceased by her sisters, Babs Mills and Sylvia Bevan. Survived, in the U.K., by her three nephews, and in Canada by her extended family and many friends from coast to coast.
Valerie was born in Halifax, England and came to Canada to pursue her career, first as a Medical Laboratory Technologist, and later as an educator and CEO of her professional organization. It was in this latter role that Valerie was privileged to criss-cross the country, meeting fellow professionals and making friends.
Valerie loved baroque and classical music. She supported Tafelmusik from its inception, enjoying live concerts of both orchestra and choir.
Valerie loved to entertain, particularly when she could share the products of her other hobby, wine collecting. She was a member of the Opimian Society and would pore over the magazine’s offerings, ordering even when the wine cabinet was full!
Valerie enjoyed the destinations of her travels to New Zealand, France, the east and west coasts of Canada and the U.S., but not the means of getting there! Car trips took her throughout Ontario and parts of Quebec, northern New York State, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire.
In accordance with her wishes, Valerie has been cremated.
Later in the year her closest friends and extended family will hold a private gathering in celebration of her life.
Donations may be made to her favourite charity, The Salvation Arm y, in recognition of the work they do with marginalized and overlooked people.
