Villen Taratuta

Villen Taratuta peacefully passed away in Mississauga on February 18th at the age of 92.  Villen lived a long and eventful life. He witnessed wars, the changing of leaders, the “Thaw”, the “Stagnation”, the Perestroika…This life tempered his character, but did not acerbate him.

He was born December 27th, 1930, in Odessa, a city known for its cheerful nature that is sometimes referred to as the capital of laughter and humor. He was an Odessan to the fullest! His amazing sense of humor and ability to make others laugh won over the heart of his future wife, Nina, who never had a lack of suitors of which many who seemed to be more enviable grooms than him. Like many children from Jewish families, he was a good student. He finished school with a gold medal and university with honors with distinction, however being part of the “chosen people” made it very difficult to find work afterwards. The dream to become a scientist had to be rerouted to the humbler profession of applied research. He repaid the organization’s faith in not being afraid to hire a Jewish graduate without placement from the Chemical Department of Moscow State University with 44 years of service, from graduation to retirement.

Although he reached undisputed achievements in his research, being awarded with the State Prize and countless other awards, he was unambitious, never wanting to have an executive position and always remaining a modest head of laboratory. There is only one thesis with his name on it, however he greatly helped countless others write their own academic thesis, never asking for recognition. Colleagues not only respected him, but also loved him. This lack of vanity allowed him to excel at many things, however ultimately stopping him from reaching great heights that are often painful to fall from. He was an amazing photographer, and with the small amount of money he made off this hobby, he spent it on a resort vacation with his favourite woman. After that, he only took photos of her and their adored daughter. He was a fantastic Marriage player and knew all the Moscow professional players, who greatly respected him. However, he was never a gambler and was always measured. From the birth of his daughter, card games became household entertainment and were used as a learning tool for calculations and logic for the growing child.

There was perhaps one more hobby that remained a constant for many years, collecting pocket calendars. Later, it was discovered that he was one of the founding members of the Moscow Calendar Society and had one of the best collections in the country. But not even this took him away from his family, who he was loyal to all his life. He spent endless time with his daughter. He nursed her while writing his dissertation, taught her how to read and write, discussed school projects, taught her how to drive a car, how to pickle tomatoes and how to make the family’s favorite dessert. Afterwards, he would do the same with his grandchildren and even got the chance to enjoy the company of his great-grandson.

The motto of his life was always LOVE! He adored his wife and they lived together for almost 65 years. For his daughter and her little ones, he left work and moved to a different country. While looking at his great-grandson he always smiled happily and people around him felt this. People were always endeared by him, without him doing anything particularly special. He was loved by his friends, his daughter’s friends, his grandchildren’s friends, neighbours, nurses at the hospital, PSWs, and of course his family.

Виллен Таратута скончался в Миссассаге, 18 февраля 2023 г. В возпасте 92 лет. Виллен прожил долгую жизнь, полную разных событий. Он был свиделем войн, смены вождей,  оттепели, застоя, перестройки... Эта жизнь закалила его, но не ожесточила.

Он родился 27 декбря 1930 года в Одессе – городе, известном своим веселым нравом, который иногда называют столицей смеха и юмора. И он был одесситом сполна! Его потрясающее чувство юмора и умение заставить людей смеяться завоевало для него сердце его будующей жены, Нины, которая никогда не имела недостатка в ухажерах, куда более видных чем он.

Как большинство детей из еврейских семей, он хорошо учился. Окончил школу с золотой медалью, Университет с красным дипломом. Но принадлежность к «избранной» нации сильно затруднила возможность трудоустройства. Мечту заниматься наукой пришлось заменить скромными прикладными исследованиями. Организации не побоявшейся взять на работу никуда не распеределенного еврея, выпускника Химического факультете МГУ, он отплатил 44 годами службы, продлвшейся от студенчекой скамьи, до выхода на пенсию.

Несмотря на несомненные достижения в области своих исследований, признанных вручением Государственной Премии и многочисленными наградами, он был начисто лишен чистолюбия, никогда не стремился стать начальником и так и остался скромным завлабом. Лишь одна диссертация подписана его собственным именем, но очень могим он сильно помог поставть свои имена под их научными трудами.никогда ничего себе за это не требуя взамен. Коллеги его не только уважали, но и любили.

Это отсутствие тщеславия, позволяло ему быть успешным во многом, но не стремиться к вершинам, с которых больно падать вниз. Он был прекрасным фотографом, но заработав немного денег на портретной фотографии, потратил их на поездку на курорт с любимой женциной, и после фотографировал только ее и их обожаемую дочь. Он прекрасно играл в проферанс, знал всех московских профессионалов и пользовался среди них уважением, но никогда не был азартен. А с рождением дочери, карточные игры стали домашним развлечением и использовались для обучения счету и логике подрастающего ребенка.

Было, пожалуй, одно увлечение, которому он оставался верен долгое время. Он собирал календарики. Позже мы узнали, что он стоял у истоков общества календофилистов России и имел одну из лучших коллекций в стране. Но и это не отрывало его надолго от семьи, преданность которой он пронес через всю свою жизнь.  Сколько времени посвятил он дочери! Он няньчил ее, когда писал диссертацию, учил читать и писать, обсуждал с ней школьные проекты, учил водить машину, мариновать помидоры и делать колбаску. А потом повторил большую часть этого с внуками. И еще успел насладиться компанией правнука!

Девизом всей своей жизни он сделал ЛЮБОВЬ! Он обожал свою жену – они прожили вместе без малого 65 лет! Ради дочери и ее малышей он ушел с работы и переехал в другую страну! Глядя на правнука он всегда счастливо улыбался. И окружающие это чувствовали. Ничего специально не делая, он умел расположить к себе. Его любили друзья, друзья дочери, друзья внуков, соседи, медсестры в больницах, социальные работники, приходившие помогать, и, конечно, семья!
