It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Vincent (Vince) Meechan, 78, of Ottawa, Ontario, on October 25, 2022. Born in Glace Bay, NS on March 7, 1944, he was the son of the late Michael Meechan and Vera (MacDonald) Meechan of Hickman Street.
A “newspaper man” at heart, Vince worked as a sports writer for various papers in the 1970s, including the Cape Breton Post, before moving on to become the Manager of the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay. In the early 80s, Vince moved to Ottawa where he worked for a time for the Hon. Eugene Whalen, and then transitioned into advertising and communications. Vince was a true communicator: he could be found pounding out a story, proposal or communications strategy late into the night on an old Underwood typewriter; or he’d be on a phone, any phone, calling family and friends, often with an entertaining story to share.
He is survived by his wife Marie Melvin, his daughter Jennifer Meechan and granddaughter Madeline; his son Ralph Meechan, his step-son Sean Hicks (Tracy), and grandchildren Melanie Manafi (Behnam), Cole and Alyssa and great grandchildren Mazin and Darius; his step-son Colin Hicks (Nicole) and grandchildren Owen, Elly and Finley; and his sister Margaret Ann Green (Steven), as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews, and his furry pal, Teddy.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Michael Meechan and sister-in-law Gail (Denny) Meechan, and his brother Howard Meechan, as well as many close uncles and aunts, including Tom MacDonald (Helene) and Vincent MacDonald (Brenda).
The funeral will take place on Saturday, November 12, 2022 (11:00 am) at the Divine Infant Catholic Church at 6658 Bilberry Drive (Ottawa, Ontario), followed by a short reception. The family would also like to invite people to a Cape Breton Ceilidh / kitchen party afterwards at 2951 Birchgrove Road. Vince loved a party with great music and storytelling. Please come and share your stories about Vince.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff at the Civic Hospital for their care and kindness in Vince’s final days. Donations in memory of Vince may be made to Crohn's & Colitis Canada or the charity of your choice.
