Stewart did not wake from his last night’s sleep, dying quietly at home in Almonte, as he had always wished and leaving “feet first” as he had said he would.
As he often pointed out, with characteristic humor, the cause of death is rarely mentioned when someone is 91. It was through his humor that I made my first connection with him, and it was his wit and wisdom that kept a smile on my face for 57 years of marriage. I miss his generosity, his intelligence and his companionship.
A highly respected educator, with a second career as a playwright, poet and author, he will be remembered for his intellect, his achievements, his many great stories and his love for and pride in his family.
He is survived by his son, Alexander (Barbara) and daughter Sarah (Stephen), as well as his grand-daughter, Isabelle — and by me, his wife, Iris.
Our sincere thanks to all who helped care for Stewart and make it possible for him to stay at home: our family doctor, who made regular home visits; Bayshore PSWs, nurses and office staff. Particular thanks to Mike Meehan, who always made a huge difference to Stewart’s comfort and contentment.
We look forward to having a celebration of Stewart’s life in February 2025.
