William Spruin

November 20, 1939 — May 2, 2015

Spruin, William George – Passed away Peacefully on May 2, 2015 in Ottawa with his family by his side. He was born in Halifax on Nov 20, 1939 to John and Ethel (Lynch) Spruin. He recently retired from Public Works and Government Services Canada and The Professional Institute of the Public Service (PIPS) in both Halifax and Ottawa. He championed for the rights of others, Dad was indeed a “force to be reckoned with” A dedicated colleague, friend, peer coach and mentor. He was respected on both sides of the negotiating table. Utilizing his unique sense of humor, Dad diffused many difficult situations. He is survived by his partner and guardian angel, Patricia O’Reilly of Ottawa. He is survived by his former wife Helen Spruin and his children Bill (Bonnie), Jennifer Thompson (Blaine), Peter, Alan (Tanya), Kevin (Rhonda) and 13 grandchildren, all of Halifax, as well as many nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his older sisters, Betty Anne McIsaac and Jackie McCutcheon and leaves to mourn his brother Ed ( Elizabeth) and sister Marilyn Morrison (George). Special thanks is extended to the Peritoneal Dialysis Unit at Riverside Hospital for the exceptional compassion and care shown during his extended fight against rental failure. Dad was a strong advocate for the importance of organ donation. His wish was to encourage everyone who can to register as an organ donor online at www.beadonor.ca. Donations in his memory would be appreciated to the Kidney Foundation of Canada at www.kidney.ca. In accordance with Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place and an Irish Wake was celebrated in his honor at the Heart and Crown in Ottawa.
